The ROCK’s Greatest Hits and The Sentinel Goes Live

LOS OSOS GROUP LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE SEEKING FEDERAL ACTION TO STOP COUNTY SEWER

A group of Los Osos citizens have launched a new online publication, The Los Osos Sentinel, to stop the County’s plan to build a central sewer system in Los Osos. The new website (http://www.lososossentinel.com) is on a mission not only to better inform the community on the deep roots of the Los Osos central sewer project — but to rally the community to fight back in federal court. ARE YOU HAVING SEWER PROBLEMS??

You are not alone. You are just the latest victim of the State Water Board’s “Scam of the Century.” Read about the test case of tortured Los Osos and how other small towns up and down the coast are suffering from septic shock, as rogue Regional Water Boards statewide cry pollution without proof so they can replace working septic tanks with spill-prone, unnecessary and excessively expensive central sewers — and force a select group of homeowners to pay for it. Don’t be fooled. Open your eyes and learn the facts before you find yourself paying $500 a month to fix a “problem” that never really existed in the first place — or has been falsely and conveniently attributed to all septics. The whole story of the “Sewer Scam,” how it works and what’s happening today is so incredible that unless you start reading The ROCK right now it will be far, far too late to do anything about it in time.

The Los Osos Sentinel is a web site that provides a lot of information. I like to call it the “Los Osos Master File” since it includes a lot of documentation that shows insight from experts who challenged the state and regional water boards for their “mandating” of the sewer. The colorful, bold commentary (the “vaccine-resistant, deadly pathogen-producing factory“) kept me entertained as I read Heroes & Villains and Illegal Wells, my two favorite sections. The Laws & Codes gives you a good idea of the legal issues that effectively preempt claims from supporters of water board enforcement that the process was squeaky-clean. The information triumphs over the tone of the message. We do need to study the material to reduce misunderstandings and misconceptions that have been floating around our community for more than 20 years. This is a serious opportunity to look at the analysis, look at the reports, look at the studies and then ask yourself, “Is the current County project really worth it?” That’s a question only you, the reader, can answer.

Now that The Sentinel made its debut, we at The ROCK decided to follow suit and and post the most popular articles from our 2006-2008 archives. Here is the list of stories that everyone is talking about today:

If this is a local group, why are we asked to send money to Las Vegas ? I google-earthed the address, 5348 Vegas Dr, and the place appears to be a ‘head shop’ selling various ‘herbs’ for smoking (free pipe with order!), and mushroom- laced coffee. Very strange.

Good example of research, Sam I am (not I),
Still a good compilation, of one of the extreme viewpints.

This is a very interesting read & for those of us who have been around this nightmare for any length of time, is quite factual. I have no idea who has put these “facts” together, but I hope it gets read by many more people. I especially enjoyed the “heros/villian” section. Cudos to whoever put this together, because they are dead on accurate! It really was a shame that McPherson & “Wheelie” de-railed the LOTA suit. If that had gone through, things would have been much different in Los Osos today. McPherson ranks right up there with Pandie.

I have no idea who put this crap together, either. I just know it is some scared-to-death “no sewer in my lifetime” idiot who didn’t heed the warnings and start a bank account to pay for it, years ago. So, sorry – maybe you need to just go. No loss…

    Sam,
You have no concept of reality! Most of us WANT A SEWER. Not just the expensive one the county has chosen. Yes, MOST of us have set aside the $25,000 for the assessment, but the monthly charge of AT LEAST $450 per month is prohibitive for MOST residents of the PZ and is out of the question. I overheard a couple yesterday in Morro Bay “grousing” over their water & sewer bill being $250! Hell, that’s chicken feed compared to what WE’LL be FORCED TO PAY.
Getting back to the Sentinel piece, Pat “Bubble Butt” McClennihan, Vivien “Ms. Waddles” McNeil, Jan DiLeo & Le Gros stooge, that ugly A$$ Tina Peterson should all be included as VILLIANS. Oh! & I forgot, Keith Swanson should be on that list as well. He’s as bad as Wheelie & Margotson!

    Lisa,

Feel free to move if you do not want to pay for the privilege of living in Los Osos. The true $ cost of the community´s past voting decisons are coming home to roost. Unless you are willing to pay for those decisons to cleanup the pollution you and your family have contributed to Los Osos over the years you have lived here, then be grateful for the many years you were able to live in Los Osos without paying a dime towards the coming environmental cleanup.

After all, it is only money we are talking about. As for me, I value the quality of life here in the benign climate of Los Osos, and find the coming price a bargain in comparisions to life elsewhere.

It’s interesting in how paying for a sewer has suddenly become a privilege to live in Los Osos — a luxury if you will. “If you can’t afford the $250/month, then move.” The tone of LOL’s post attests to the desire of getting rid of the “riff-raff” who have “done nothing” to clean up their pollution. This belief stems from the blanket assumption that everyone in the Prohibition Zone is polluting. Unless the Regional Water Board physically tested every septic tank and found that every septic tank was polluting, then the assumption is nothing more than an assumption.

I’m thinking of Los Osos residents who never got involved in the politics; who never bothered to get their hands dirty. These people don’t know it yet, but they’re about to pay a very, very expensive sewer tax — and these people are being attacked by sewer warmongers for being a part of the problem, for being polluters; for voting to have an affordable sewer out of town. Now it’s their fault, now they have to pay for the privilege of being in a town that also has people like Richard LeGros relentlessly mocking them and turning them into a defenseless political weapon of words.

Well I revisited the Sentinel It’s fairly well written, but has the usual biases and the “this time it will work” naivete. I certainly could had written the AL, and McPherson sections myself, but the “Compelling evidence” by the Shicker submission is as filtered and naïve as filtered and naïve gets.
Interesting inclusion of Swanson and Margotson. (and a few other drive by shootings and accolades)I have no PERSONAL reason to support Margotson or even my fellow LOCAC member Keith Swanson, Otherwise in fact, never mind the details. (OK they both tacitly supported Al’s Disruption of Committee meetings and Faux Low income housing concerns and a few other counter productive things besides) BUT I have seen both spend SERIOUS PERSONAL time and effort on legitimate efforts that serve the Community. (Keith is pretty much overwhelmed by work last couple of years but is doing the unappreciated grunt work in recording the LOCAC meetings and other contributions)
ESPECIALY; they both have given their time and EFFORTS to NON-SEWER RELATED ITEMS. AND that happens to be true as far as some members of the community who are on the opposite side.

Los Osos is a small town and it does not deserve ANY of this, but the one part we do have control over, is how we chose to treat each other.

Who actually believes that The Sentinel’s RICO charge could ever, possibly save us money ? I mean if you truly want to send $600 to an anonymous group (or person) based in Las Vegas – go ahead. Just don’t be surprised if it turns out to be a scam to fleece old people out of their money. “Look, honey ! This guy says we can save $25,000 by paying only $600 RIGHT NOW!” It sounds like a scheme to line someone’s pockets, so perhaps the DA should take a look. Meanwhile, trying to stop or slow progress on this issue costs me money. It will never get cheaper, and going back to ‘square one’ is a silly idea. We’ve been at ‘square one’ so many times, it’s ridiculous.

    Mr. Ochs,

    Life is expensive.
There are many places in the world I wish to live; but darnit! I cannot afford to.
We alI make decisions in life based upon what we can afford. I have made one of many hard choices in life and found the best place in the world I could afford. I consider the fact that I do have a choice a blessing, and it is a priviilege to be part of this wonderful community. And you know what? I consider living in Los Osos such a privilege that I regard it a social responsibility to assist in any way to help find a way so that we all may stay here too while similtaniously meeting our social responsibilities to clean up our amazing environment.

But I have to say that I have little patience for folks who steadfastly refuse to meet their responsibilities while needlessly delaylng what must be done; sadly at greater financial and environmental damage to themselves and their neighbors. Oh, I understand their fear and anger. I, like everyone else I know, struggle with life´s vagrancies. But exactly where has such fear driven behavior gotten Los Osos? (I ask rhetorically). Really, does the tone of the Sentinel sound the least bit constructive or realistic? Does focusing speculative angst and anger on your neighbors and various governmental agencies you do not agree with get anything done? There are no heroes or villians here, just people trying to live together in what I consider a slice of heaven on this earth.

I like this discussion so I would like to keep it going if that’s okay with you, LOL.

Life is expensive so I believe that our goal is to live comfortably within our means. We are forced to make hard choices, but at least they are choices for us to make. The people of Los Osos — and I’m talking especially about those who never got politically involved — did not make the choice to endure enforcement, to endure the costs. The people made one choice and that was to live in a town that was comfortably rural, affordable yet close enough to commute to the rest of the county.

The people of Los Osos did not choose to be polluters, they did not choose to be labeled as polluters, but now, they need to pay for the privilege to live in town because they are somehow responsible for negligence — because they are somehow responsible for a problem that they didn’t know that they were personally causing. We can go back through history and nitpick decisions made by community leaders and push all the accountability on them, but that’s completely counterproductive.

Let’s make a truce. Let’s make a deal. Let us put down all of our weapons, the mud we’ve been slinging and let us look at who is suffering. The residents are suffering. How should we solve it? We need to focus on supporting a solution that is financially sound and sustainable. These are not “anti-sewer” keywords. This is something that residents need so that they would not be forced to make a hard choice to leave this wonderful community. If community leaders and influential people in Los Osos steadfastly refuse to meet their responsibilities, then get better leaders. Move past those who worship the status quo of irresponsibility. Let’s move on.

Let’s talk about The Sentinel for a moment. Whoever did that site has established a voice that they feel must be heard. That’s a good thing. The problem, that I’ve found, is that people bottle up their reasoning and their voice so much that they’ll lash out with labels that blindly diminish the credibility of a targeted group. They’re “obstructionists,” they’re [insert name here]. Uttering those brands just makes matters worse — so what do you do? If you’re tired of the arguing and the nonsense, make yourself known. Do your own publication. Create your own web site. Create your own “Sentinel.” If you provide one piece of puzzle, then maybe you could be the one that puts all the pieces together and we will find a consensus. Ever tried wondering why talking to stubborn bloggers get you nowhere… you need a foundation of thought. I have not seen a web site for Taxpayers Watch, but if one should ever surface, I would publicize it just as I did with The Sentinel and stand by it. You have my word.

    LOL…Little Old Lady,
You have shown what a dumb A$$ you really are! Don’t ever presume that it is a privilege to live HERE & I AM PAYING MY FAIR SHARE. Aaron is correct, it has NOT been proven that MY septic tank is polluting, in fact, unless you live in a very low lying area, such as Pandie & Leon, & your septic tank has been maintained & is working properly, it is very likely that you are NOT polluting. Little old Lady, let’s be clear, Los Osos is NO UTOPIA. Maybe you need to have your eyes examined as well as your head. There are much nicer places & more affordable than Los Osos, but unfortunately for many reasons, many of us are unable to relocate.(much as we’d like to) Rather than “blaming” the citizens of the PZ for the alleged pollution, put the blame where it belongs,,,ON THE COUNTY. The poor & inept planning (or lack of) is the fault of the county. Ask yourself, Why did the county “permit” multiple units to be built on under sized lots, why did the county allow over 1,000 homes with fully permitted septics to be built in the PZ after 1984? Those mistakes were made by the County & it’s time for the county to “own” those mistakes. The County is still making blunders…Why do they “allow” illegal storage of RV’s, travel trailers, etc. in drive ways in Los Osos, when they “cracked down” on Dan DuVaul who has 72 acres? Maybe it’s time for the County to really clean house & start getting rid of some “dead wood”, ie: Paavo Ogren, Art Trinidade, etc. BTW, LOL, you’re sounding more & more like that limp wristed Richard LeGros.

    It’s a family affair, it’s a family affair
    It’s a family affair, it’s a family affair

Thanks for being the first to identify me as a centurist, though, reading the above, I’m not sure if that means the same thing in both our Houses. I’m afraid the representation of the rock is now false in my eyes.
Yours is not the stone that the builders refused, that turned into a cornerstone, merly a large pebble to be picked up by the “first stone” throwers who did not heed the message. Ed; Feel free to call me.

    Hi Alon,

I’m surprised to find out you are not a centrist but a “centurist.” That would explain the long mane.

I’m sorry to hear The Rock has turned false for you now. Everyone must find their own truth. I assume you have found a truer representation of your beliefs in Bruce Gibson & His Four Tomato Cans, Paavo, Pandora, Gordon, LeGros, Jeffrey Young and Roger Briggs. You always seemed to be leaning that way anyway, so congratulations on finding your way home in the dark with no star to guide you. I guess you deserve credit for that.

If The Rock is a false representation, then so is DR. TOM RUEHR, DR. DAN WICKHAM, DR. JOHN ALEXANDER, DR. JAMES KRIESSEL, DR. ROY SPALDING, WADE BRIMM, GLENN STILLMAN, GRAHAM KNOWLES, PIO LOMBARDO, BAHMAN SHEIKH and DAVID VENHUIZEN, to name just a small army of wisemen. I have to question why you have shown in public more respect for bad government than good science, even though I believe you have a degree (not a doctorate) in microbiology. Exactly when did you quit science for religion? Was it a bad reaction to a flu shot that erased your education?

One man’s centrist (or centurist) is another man’s butcher, and even though I encouraged your centrality, I’ve never been really 100% clear as to your “true representations.” So here’s a brief “TRUE or FALSE” quiz you can respond to that would clear up your positions on the sewer for me:

TRUE … or FALSE? (no explanations please)
    a) I am pro-gravity.
    b) I am pro-STEP.
    c) I am not pro-gravity but I am not much against it, either.
    d) I am not anti-gravity but I am not much for it, either.
    e) I am not pro-STEP but I am not much against it, either.
    f) I am not anti-STEP but I am not much for it, either.
    g) Either system — STEP or gravity — is fine with me.
    h) I am careful not to be much for or against anything that people can really tell for sure.
    i) Gibson killing off all alternatives on April 7th based on a rigged community survey is OK with me.
    j) Gibson violating the 218 vote by killing off all alternatives is OK with me.
    k) Thousands getting booted out of town (including maybe me too) by an unaffordable, unhealthy central sewer is OK with me — if that’s what the County wants or accomplishes.
    l) I am not OK with a lot of things but not that much against anything to speak up.
    m) I want to be accepted by the Dreamers because they hold the reins of power and have all the money and I want to ride a winner, right or wrong.
    n) I am more concerned with presenting my credentials and appearing to be a “centrist” than taking a stand and risk making my positions known (thereby making a real difference).
    o) The man in the middle is the man on the bottom.

I look forward to scoring the results of your quiz. If you want to catch rabbits, you have to learn their habits.

    Ed,
Your points are all very well taken. I have NEVER been a “middle of the road” or “fence straddler” type of person. You will ALWAYS know EXACTLY where you stand with me. The thing that has puzzled me (& others), we all know that it is the HOME OWNERS in the PZ footing the bill for whatever system we get, so WHY do people like Barrow, Perlmon, Duggan & many other renters/squaters get involved in this & just muck things up for the homeowners? Their rent can only go up so much, certainly not in proportion to what the homeowner has to pay. Since it IS the homeowner paying for the system, then BY GOD, it better be the BEST, most efficient & least expensive we can get. Remember who’s paying for it. If Bruce & Paavo can’t keep those simple facts in mind, then it’s time to say “Bye,Bye”, guys, get another job. You are NOT serving your community. We deserve better in Los Osos & will no longer be treated like step children.

We deserve better in Los Osos? Why? All we have done is avoid any attempt to drag us kicking and screaming into the 20th century (forget it’s the 21st, we apparently cannot even address that issue.) Yes, the county (and the State) treat us like the proverbial red-headed stepchild. Patience has its limits.

“Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” is one of the most famous phrases in the United States Declaration of Independence. These three aspects are listed among the “unalienable rights” of man. I am not guaranteed happiness but only the right to pursue happiness. If living in Los Osos is what makes me happy I shall “endeavor to persevere” towards that constant. How I live is my choice whether others approve or not. If my politics and activism bothers someone, tough. I will not compromise my convictions as I would not ask others to do. If I have the advantage should I level the playing field so others can forward their convictions? I don’t think so and I would not expect others to do so for me. We must strive to find our own paradise. That’s the nature of all things.
